Have you ever treated yourself to a “fancy” night on the town? Well the other weekend a good friend of the family insisted we share her dining etiquette story or should I say horror story. (For confidential reasons I’ll be using different names. ) Sarah was celebrating her four-year anniversary with John her boyfriend by seeing the amazing Broadway [theetiquetteadvantage] performance of Wicked and enjoying a fine dining experience.   They settled on a new Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown, the social epicenter of the city. Sarah and John are both recent college grads who are on a tight budget, as are most young couples.   With this in mind, it’s time for their 6 o’clock reservations where they are seated at a beautiful table with a great view.  Their server theetiquetteadvantage greets them and asks for drink orders.   Since this is a special occasion, Sarah and John agree to order wine.   Our couple is new to fine dining so they take the advice of their server.   Out comes the bottle of wine, which the server uncorks, pours, asks Sarah to taste… HOLY $#^! Sarah just realizes they bought the whole bottle!  Right away she goes into panic mode looking for the funky Italian name on the wine list…you guessed it, Sarah and John just bought a $100 bottle of wine without even knowing it. Long story short John remained calm and talked to their server by explaining the mix-up.   Like most fine dining restaurant they agreed to sell them each a glass of wine for $12.   Good thing the etiquette gods where watching over Sarah and John! Moral of the story: Some could say the restaurant took advantage of Sarah and John but bottom line for all you newbies out there remember two things when fine dining: first theetiquetteadvantage, don’t ever feel rushed into make a decision you are not comfortable with and two make sure you specify when ordering wine by the glass or bottle.
